Mastering:
Mastering is the final step before your music goes out to be consumed by the public.
It is here that all the finishing touches are applied to your music to make sure it is the best it can be with formatting applied to suit the delivery method chosen.
Vinyl masters can be very different from Digital masters for example.
Vinyl requires more headroom so the cutting engineer at the pressing plant is not turning down your master or having to apply aggressive EQ at the cutting stage.
This is because Vinyl is a physical medium with some limitations in the format that CD and other digital mediums do not.
That's not to say vinyl is better or worse, simply different and has needs that need to be addressed.
For example, excessive hi-frequency information and Phase correlation issues in the low end can cause a cutting engineer to make very drastic changes to the sound of your record simply to accommodate the format. It is always better to have these issues addressed before it gets to the cutting engineer. This avoids any nasty surprises when you get a test pressing back in your hands.
Submitting your files for mastering:
You should be submitting stereo files for mastering at the highest possible resolution you have available to you and we would recommend you keep the peak level to -3 or less and removing any peak limiting you have on the master buss.
This allows us more room to shape the EQ and dynamics of your album and deliver a master of the highest quality.
Masters we supply:
We can supply masters as Manufacturer ready DDP files, MP3, Digital 16 bit 44.1, 24 bit 44.1, and higher etc… We can have Vinyl masters ready for the pressing plant of your choice.
FAQs
Where are you?
We are located in Preston. Within the walls of the Jam Hut Rehearsal Studios buildings. Melbourne, Australia. The World.
Parking is right out front off the street., super easy to load in.
Can I use your stuff?
All the musical equipment at Goatsound is available for use during your session.
There are no extra costs for this, although if you use a snare drum and beat the skin to bits it would be great if you could buy a new skin for it.
Not compulsory, but appreciated.
I'm starving, where can I eat?
Preston Markets are only a few minutes walk, there are lots of pizza shops, Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai and Korean restaurants all reasonably close, Perfect for a quick break away from the studio while the bass player is doing his endless overdubs. There is also a fancy coffee bar almost directly across the road and a big multinational supermarket within 5 minutes that will rip off both farmers and customers alike.
Hey man, it's been 11 years, you still got my Masters?
Goatsound is not responsible for archiving your recording, that is the sole responsibility of the artist. Hard drives can fail and I don't want to be the one to tell you everything is gone.
You should bring a hard drive on the first day so we can back everything up to that at the end of each day. That said, I do try and keep as much as I can.
We want to use tape!
If you want to use Analogue tape you should include in your budget the need to buy some tape.
It's a few hundred bucks for a reel and that will give you about 30 mins of recording. We have some lightly used tape that for most noisy bands is perfectly fine.
